Preparing for your first conversation

Think through what you want help with, what to ask and what information you feel comfortable sharing.

You do not need to write a complete personal narrative before asking what information a provider needs.

Start with the practical picture

Consider the broad location, type of situation, parts of the property affected, whether the property is occupied, access considerations, and the outcome you need first.

  • Who is arranging the work?
  • Is there a useful timing or access constraint?
  • Are possessions a significant part of the situation?
  • Is there a known contamination context that affects the capability question?

Protect your privacy

Share only what is needed for the next step. You do not need to provide unnecessary sensitive personal narratives, names, diagnoses, or exact personal details just to ask whether a provider covers a service.

Do not assume that photographs are always necessary. Ask how a provider assesses a situation and how any information will be handled.

Make the first question useful

A concise description can be enough to ask whether the provider has relevant experience, what it needs to assess the work, and whether it can explain its scope and likely next steps.

Practical next step

See questions to ask a provider

Use meaningful scope and process questions rather than treating ratings as a substitute for fit.
